Antique French 18 Carat Gold Owl Long Guard Chain
Gorgeous 18 carat gold french longuard chain. The yellow gold chain is made up of tiny rectangular snake like links, terminating at the bottom by linking on to the head of an owl like creature, his eyes set with emeralds. (the ring on the owl's head is where the hallmark is for 750 gold, and there is an eagle on the dog clip) He holds a gold ring in his beak which in turn holds a gold dog clip, the type that you unscrew to open. The reverse of the owl is chased with scrolls and leaves The chain also holds an elegant little gold slider, its four sides set with Burma Rubies in fancy scrolling settings. Do you know what owls symbolise? They symbolise the ability to see in the dark, to see what the masses cannot see. They have enlightenment. The "owl demon" most commonly refers to Stolas, a Great Prince of Hell from grimoires like the Ars Goetia, known for teaching astronomy, plants, and gems, depicted as a crowned owl or raven Other owl-like demons appear in folklore, sometimes linked to witchcraft or night spirits, but Stolas is the primary figure associated with the term. weighs - 20.8g chain is 54" long French circa 1880 18 carat gold Immaculate condition.
