Harlequin jewellery is defined as jewellery set with “dissimilar gemstones of different colours” and was particularly popular in England during the Victorian period (An Illustrated Dictionary of Jewelry). Such pieces may also be described as multi-gem jewellery. The term harlequin is derived from a character in the late sixteenth-century Italian Commedia dell’Arte, a form of comic theatre characterised by a repertoire of stock characters identifiable by their distinctive costumes. This theatrical tradition later became incorporated into English pantomime. The character of Harlequin was originally depicted wearing a peasant’s shirt and trousers adorned with irregular patches of various colours; over time, this costume evolved into a close-fitting tunic and leggings decorated with a repeating pattern of coloured diamonds and triangles.
Perfect on a Georgian chain.
