Edwardian Ostby & Barton Garnet Cabochon Signet Ring
I’ve been holding off on posting this ring because I truly love it, and truly want to keep it. But it’s large enough that it can’t be sized down to fit me, so I will literally never be able to wear it. I have to let it go, so it will find a home where it can be loved and worn. It’s Edwardian, dating to 1911—which I know because I was actually able to find it in an advertisement! It was made by Ostby Barton, and given the date (plus the Maltese cross hallmark), we know that it was actually designed by Ostby himself before he died on the Titanic. For those who appreciate that particular historical nugget! The garnet is large and in really lovely condition, with very minimal wear or abrasion, which is quite amazing given the age of the piece. It’s so juicy and glowy, just absolutely everything you want a garnet to be. And the setting is in amazing condition too! I’m obsessed with the open cutouts to either side of the stone. The ring really only has wear to the hallmarks inside the band. The ring is a size 11.25 on the mandrel, though it likely fits more like a 12. I think it can definitely be sized down to a 9, possibly an 8, although care will have to be taken if you want to retain the hallmarks.
